Time
Time is ultimately our measurement tool. Everyday we are one day closer to or one day farther away from a Personal Record. Also we are either one day closer to or one day farther from our last or next best race! At the end of the race we will measure ourselves by time.
50 years ago Pink Floyd released an album titled Dark Side of the Moon. On that album you’ll find the song Time:
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
50 years ago was also the first year of the Western State Endurance Run.
50 years!
Timing
Timing is everything or so the saying goes. Timing can also seem very tricky, sometimes is just works and other times its a matter of seconds of minutes, and hour or a day.
June of 2019 Amelia Cameron’s school, Village Academy, closed their doors and left Amelia looking for a school to attend her Junior year of high school. When I heard from Amelia’s parents that she was joining the FHS CC team I was like “WHAT!?!?” And what happened was timing. We had a team that needed just 1 more runner to compete for a spot at the OHSAA State Championships. The 2019 girls team blew through regional and state appearance barriers to become the first CC team at Fairbanks to achieve both and Amelia was our top runner that season. The timing was perfect, it just worked out that way.
When I was thinking of what to write this week I wanted to use a time lapse video from Ultimate Frisbee last week. All I could think about was time, time lapse, timing……I knew I wanted to add the Pink Floyd song in some how too.
I woke up this morning still thinking about it, drinking my coffee and thinking about time. I was reflecting on the last 2 months, the crops, the cows, timing what makes it all work. Then I thought I would check on something I hadn’t thought about for a while, Western States. I went to the website and realized it started yesterday!! A race that I’ve thought about a lot over the last year. I missed the starting gun. How’s that for timing.

Lucky for me there were still a lot of runners on the trail of Western States. I watched enough to get pumped up and got out and hit a 15 miler.
What we do with our time impacts timing. The 2019 team was built and ready for just 1 more runner to set it off. That took time and miles and effort and a pack of runners. Amelia was amazing but so were Kalor, Fitz, Kinkaid, Eddy, Hubbs and Kai. 7 All-Timers.
As much as I wanted to see the start to the Western States and clearly I haven’t spent much time thinking about it recently, the time I’ve spent running set me up for a 15 miler today, hopefully 1 day closer to being on the starting line at Western States.
Momento: The alarm clocks are going off from the Dark Side of the Moon, Time!
